The following e-mail exchange between Charlene Lloyd, a concerned citizen of Williams, and David Cavez, the Drake representative in charge of the Perkinsville Road project,
As of August 2022, Drake Cement is engaged in its Perkinsville Road Exploration Project within the Kaibab National Forest. The site, in a location that was mined previously, lies about two miles distant from the southernmost edge of Williams.
This exploration is scheduled to last about one month. To help determine whether Drake Cement’s staked claims in the area contain natural pozzolan deposits suitable for mining, the company will dig eight small trenches, each about 200 square feet.
Per U.S. Forest Service requirements, these trenches will be graded and repaired – with all the removed materials completely restored – once the exploration is finished.
We will continue to do due diligence and meet proactively with multiple stakeholders, including City of Williams leadership and local residents. While the General Mining Act of 1872 offers wide latitude for prospecting and mining on any federal land that has not been set aside for a specific use, Drake Cement conducts itself as a socially responsible company, one that acknowledges its impact on the world around us and strives at all times to be a responsible corporate citizen.
